| Part-Time Job | One of the ways of getting more financial independency from your parents or sponsors is taking a part-time job. You can work in the daytime, when you are free from classes, at the evening or at the weekends.
There are many ways to find part-time work for student. First of all you can go to your school careers service and check what it can offer you. Secondly, ask your tutor either your college has any job schemes for work experience. Define what sector of work you are interested in. Send your CV to the companies of this sector (you can find them in the Yellow Pages). Ask your friends and relatives to have their eyes on vacancies where they work. Try to get a volunteer job in a company. It will help you to get an experience, give a chance to show your skills and eager to work. Speak to the people already working in that company and try to find out about any opportunities before they will have gone public (sometimes vacancies are announced at first inside the company).
Part-time job is almost essential for good future employment. All employers prefer to hire people with at least small previous experience (communication, organizational, motivational and IT skills).
Whatever you decide to do, take care about yourself and be aware of how much you take on. You should have enough time and energy for your studying and social life.
International students have less employment opportunities in comparison with US students. If you are an international student, you’d better do not plan on earning big money from a part-time job. You are allowed to work in campus, but mostly it is possible to find only difficult obtained low-paid positions. Students with good academic standing have better chances. Work out of campus requires permission from US Immigration and Naturalization Service. Usually it is difficult to get such approval. But, there may be opportunities for some practical training, which implies a period of authorized employment, intended to let foreign students gain professional work experience related to their field of study. If you are interested in such practice, contact the foreign student advisor at your university.
