Every scholarship sponsor is trying to select the students that best meet their selection criteria. If the selection doesn't based on academic merit, then it might depend on athletic or artistic merit, extracurricular activities, community service, or on skill in a non-academic discipline. The winners are always the students who reflect perfectly the goals of the scholarship sponsor. Applicants don't necessarily need to be academically gifted, but do need to be prominent and astonishing in other ways.

Creativity 

Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Contest
The Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck on Prom Contest is available to students age 14 years or older who are attending a high school prom in the spring. Candidates must be US citizenships. Entrants must enter as a couple (two individuals) and attend a high school prom wearing complete attire or accessories made from duct tape. The submission must include a color photograph of the couple together in prom attire. The first place scholarship valued at $2,500 for each member of the winning couple and a $2,500 cash prize to the school that hosted the prom. The second place includes $1,000, the third place includes $500, and Duck Tape sportswear for honorable mentions. The selection criteria based on workmanship, originality, use of colors, quantity of Duck Tape used, and creative use of accessories

Overcoming Adversity

Horatio Alger Association Scholarships
The Horatio Alger Association Scholarships are open for those students who have presented integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Candidates must also have strength of character, financial need, a good academic record (a GPA of 2.0 or higher), and a desire to contribute to society. Each year high school seniors receive 100 scholarships valued at $10,000 and 150 scholarships valued at $1,000. Candidates must be US citizenships. Several states also have state scholarship programs. The deadline is October 15.  

Non-Academic Achievement

AXA Achievement Scholarship Program
The AXA Achievement Scholarship Program gives $10,000 and $25,000 scholarships to high school seniors who have presented excellent achievement in non-academic activities in school, workplace or community. The award is financed by the AXA Foundation. Candidates must be US citizenships or legal residents. There are 52 winners of $10,000 scholarships. Ten national winners will receive an additional $15,000, for a total of $25,000. The application must be presented till December 15.
